About the District: Lisbon downtown, also called "Baixa Pombalina" it was built by order of the Marquis of Pombal, following the earthquake of 1755 andIt is one of the first archiectal examples of anti-seismic construction. The building foundations are curiously based on green pine stakes, embedded in alluvial plots below the water and the upper floors were built with one of the notable features of the Pombaline structures, the so-called "GAIOLA POMBALINA" (which you'll find at this apartment). The "Gaiola Pombalina" is an interlocking wooden structure designed to distribute the seismic forces. The anti-seismic architectural models were by then tested by troops marching fiercely to simulate an earthquake.
The area spreads from "Terreiro do Paço", near the river Tagus, "Rossio" and "Figueira" Square, and between the "Cais do Sodré", the "Chiado" and the "Carmo", at west, and the "Se" and the hill of the Castle of "São Jorge", at East. It actually is one of the major attractions of Lisbon and one of tthe central commercial and business districts of the City. It well deserves a proper visit.
